Indian Spices

A long list of Indian spices rules the various Indian cuisines that are common in the Indian subcontinent. There is not a single regional Indian Cuisine that does not use a list of Indian spices that are usually grown in that area and some that are brought in from far-flung places but are still very commonly used for ages.  Although there is no single Indian cuisine that is common to the whole of India, the list of Indian spices in different regional cuisines is almost the same with one or two differences. The difference in the tastes of regional Indian cuisines is in the proportions in which these spices are used and the method of cooking.

Most of the Indian spices that are used here are cultivated here for hundreds of years. Spices were an important item of trade and commerce since sea-routes were used for trading. Those that were traditionally imported are now cultivated here since almost all kinds of weather and soil varieties are found in India that are suitable for  commercial cultivation of spices.
